The following paragraphs will describe in more detail the institutions most important to the educational program in anesthesiology.
OU Medical Center (PresbyterianTower)
These are a full-service, acute care hospitals with 734 beds. There are 12 operating rooms in the main operating suite at Everett Tower and 14 operating rooms at Presbyterian Tower, with adjacent recovery rooms. In the Obstetrics Suite, there are 4 operating rooms at Everett Tower and 2 at Presbyterian Tower, with adjacent recovery rooms. Patients are accommodated in one- or two-bed rooms.
These hospitals became Level 1 Trauma Centers September 2001. They serve as a referral center for all of Oklahoma, and are the only hospitals of this kind in the state.
Surgical services include general surgery, neurosurgical, otorhinolaryngological, oral and maxillofacial, orthopedic, plastic, and obstetrical and gynecological. From July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002 12,377 separate procedures requiring anesthesia were performed, plus an additional 2,928 obstetrical procedures. 895 patients were seen in the Pain Management Center at Everett Tower.
The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center
Beginning in 1973 the Children's Hospital was completely renovated and enlarged. Also in September 2001 this hospital became a Level 1 Trauma Center. It is the only full-service pediatric center in the state, and provides a full range of subspecialty children's services. Bed capacity for Children's Hospital is 194, with 6 busy operating suites. In 2001, 4898 separate procedures requiring anesthesia were performed, including 151 pediatric open-heart surgeries.
Veterans Affairs Medical Center
This hospital was one of the first veterans' hospitals to be located within a university medical center. Built in 1953, it was extensively remodeled from 1981-85. A new operating suite and intensive care tower were opened in the summer of 1994. Physically this hospital is connected to the Everett Tower and Children's Hospital by an overhead walkway. The facility serves as a teaching center for the University. All of the surgical specialties are represented, and have active programs, except obstetrics.
Integris Baptist Medical Center
Baptist Medical Center is a large private hospital affiliated with the University, and located five miles to the north and west of the Oklahoma Health Center. The PGY-1 transitional year sponsored by the Department is based at Baptist. All services are represented in this impressive facility.
