The University of Oklahoma participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). The general surgery residency program has six ACGME approved categorical positions. Our preliminary residency positions are available based on institutional funding availability. We do not offer interviews for preliminary positions except on a case by case basis.
The General Surgery Residency Program assesses all applications through ERAS.
We review all applicants to our program, with selection emphasis towards LCEM Medical schools and those whom have signaled us through ERAS. We will offer interviews to applicants who only have a step 1 score, both step scores. We invite preliminary residents to apply for our categorical residents.
The following information outlines the process for applicants applying for a categorical General Surgery Resident position.
The application must be complete prior to receiving an invitation to interview. All applications must be submitted using ERAS, and participation in the supplemental ERAS application is optional.
A completed ERAS application contains the following documents:
- Official medical school transcript
- Official record of USMLE step scores (Step 1 and 2)
- Three current letters of recommendation, please send via ERAS (For preliminary residents applying, a letter from one’s current program director is required)
International graduates with a valid ECFMG certificate and valid visa or permanent resident status are eligible to apply and must meet all criteria mentioned above. International medical graduates are sponsored on J-1 visas. All appointments for residency are subject to ability to obtain an unrestricted Oklahoma medical license. We do not offer observerships.

Interview Details
The recruitment process will be conducted virtually and plan for some in person "Second Look" opportunities. The rank list will be composed in a fashion so that the interview format and Second Look opportunities cannot influence an applicant’s position on the rank list.
- Five (5) interview dates
- From November through January
- No interviews are scheduled between December 7th and January 7th
- We will continue to offer interviews until our dates are filled
- We will not offer more interviews than we have available interview slots
- Invited applicants have 48 hours to respond to the initial offer of an interview, but this may be shorter for those on the waitlist if associated with a cancellation.
Waitlist Details
- Once all interview dates are filled, we will offer a small number of applicants a place on the waitlist
- Applicants who receive an interview from the waitlist are at no disadvantage to anyone else interviewing with the program
- For those on the waitlist, we will communicate interview openings throughout the interview season (sometimes on quite short notice)
